AMHERST - Free school supplies for students in need will be available starting Monday at Maggie's Place
by Roxanne Poole

The supplies, available to any student regardless of age, will be at Maggie’s Place Cumberland at 11 Elmwood Dr. in Amherst from Aug. 28 to Sept. 1. The hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday.

“We don’t require any proof of anything,” said Sarah Rushton, of Maggie’s Place. “Anyone can come in, it’s free of charge and open to anyone who needs it.”

In past years the initiative has typically served 150 to 200 families each year across the county. Families could mean one or more students, so the numbers aren’t specific, says Rushton.

Students can also pick up free backpacks during the week filled with school supplies at all Cumberland Public Libraries branches except for Amherst. Typically backpacks with different kinds of supplies depending on elementary or high school are provided.

This is the third year that the libraries have participated in this partnership.

“It’s a huge help for us,” said Rushton. “We know that transportation is an issue for families. Before they had to come here to be able to pick up supplies but now hopefully we can get it out to more people who don’t have transportation by at least getting it out to the branches in the county.”

A large portion of the donated supplies are provided by Bell Aliant Pioneers volunteer network. There are also significant contributions by community residents and businesses.

Maggie’s Place has been collecting supplies all year long and is still accepting. All kinds of supplies such as scissors, coloured pencils, markers, glue sticks, loose leaf, highlighters and writing utensils are needed. Typically harder to find supplies are math sets, calculators and binders.

Rushton estimates that the program has been ongoing for about eight years.

Maggie’s Place can be contacted at 902-667-7250 for any questions.
